Course Overview

Your USMLE course will start with an online USMLE Step 1 diagnostic test. This allows you to test which areas you struggle with and where your strengths lie, from this point you’ll be able to formulate a study plan.

Our 7 week live USMLE Step 1 prep is designed to focus on the high yield, most relevant exam content and concepts enabling you to learn the skills necessary to pass the exam.

Expert Medical Faculty will fly to Hungary from the US. Each an expert in their field they will provide you with a review of content necessary for understanding and success on the USMLE Step 1 exam. The USMLE exams are not about memory recall, they require understanding of each discipline and subject area, so you can make conclusions based on the information in the question. With a full set of USMLE lecture notes, assessment tests and a USMLE Step 1 Simulated Exam you can guide your study and assess your readiness for test day.

The University of Debrecen & Accommodation

The University of Debrecen Medical School has 22 basic science departments and 25 clinical science departments. The school is accredited by the World Health Organization, US Department of Education, The State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California, the General Medicine Council, Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran and Norway. In most European countries - not listed above - and also in India the diploma of the University of Debrecen, Medical and Health Science Center is accepted for registration purposes; however a qualifying exam is compulsory.

The school is located centrally in the picturesque city of Debrecen (Hungary’s second largest city). Debrecen has excellent transport links from the capital; train links take you to the city center, or the University can arrange a car service to pick you up from the airport and take you to the campus (the journey by train or car takes approximately 2.5 hours).

The University has a range of accommodation options available for the duration of your study, differing in price and facilities. Upon enrollment, your details will be passed on to the University staff, assisting you with accommodation options. All rooms or apartments provide internet access, desks for study and either kitchenettes or cooked meals provided in the price of your stay. All are located conveniently on campus, minutes from state of the art lecture theatres.

Test Overview

Before a Physician in the US becomes licensed they must take a series of exams called the USMLEs (United States Medical Licensing Exams). USMLE Step 1 is taken by US Medical Students once they have completed their second year at Medical School. The exam focuses on Basic Scientific Knowledge and the mechanisms of health and disease. You will be tested on the following subject areas:

  • Anatomy
  • Behavioral Science
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology/Immunology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

You are expected to know all of these areas as each question will pull on knowledge from a number of them.

Test Format

Questions: 336 Questions, in 7 blocks of 48 Questions

Timing: Total of 8 hours, 60 minutes per block, 45 minutes of “break time”

Topics Tested: Anatomy, Behavioral Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology/Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology

Question Type: You will be asked to read clinical vignettes that you will make a number of conclusions based upon. You will then be faced with multiple choice questions; you pick the best answer based upon the information provided.

Format: One best answer

Test Delivery: The USMLE Step 1 is tested completely online at a Prometric Center.

Test Scores

Minimum Score: 188
Average Score for US Medical Graduates: 220-240
Average Score for International Medical Graduates: 195-215

USMLE scores are part of the decision making process for US Residency Programs to short list for interviews. To be competitive and gain a good residency program you will need a score that will compete with US Medical Graduates, as you can see above there is a difference between US Medical Graduates and IMGs.

Register for the Test

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) register and schedule for their USMLE Step 1 exam through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). You will be able to take the USMLE Step 1 outside of the US and will need to book your exam with a Prometric Center.
Registration for the exam is a multi-step process:

  1. Secure the application materials
    You will be required to send official copies of a number of documents including your transcripts and medical diploma

  2. Complete the application and submit with a recent photo and application fee
    You will be required to choose a 3-month "eligibility period" in which to take your exam

  3. Receive your Scheduling Permit
    Once your application is processed, you will receive a Scheduling Permit. This tells you the start and end dates of your 3-month eligibility period, instructions on scheduling your exam, your Scheduling Number and your Candidate Identification Number

  4. Schedule your test date directly with the Prometric centre
    To select your test date you need to contact the Prometric centre. Your Scheduling Permit will have instructions on contacting them. Make sure you have a number of dates in mind before contacting them, seats book up quickly.
