About the BMAT

Taking the BMAT is a requirement for students looking to study Medicine at:

  • Oxford University
  • Cambridge University*
  • Imperial College
  • University College London
  • University of Bristol*
  • Royal Veterinary College *

* The BMAT is required for Veterinary Science programmes.

As these are top Universities, they accept only the best candidates, therefore a good BMAT score is necessary.

The Test is a 2-hour paper-based test. Most students will take the BMAT at their School or College, however there are various open test centres which can be found at www.bmat.org.uk.

There is 1 test day per year, on which students may take the BMAT. In 2011, this date is the 2nd of November. Students must register in advance to take the test. Pleae see below for the vital registration dates.

Test Format:

Section Topics Tested Timing Scores
Aptitude & Skills 35 questions.
Questions test Problem Solving, Understanding Arguments, Data Analysis and Inference.
Questions are multiple choice.
60 minutes 1-9
Scientific Knowledge
& Application
27 Questions.
This section covers GCSE level Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Answers will either be multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, free response, or matching (e.g. labelling an illustration).
30 minutes 1-9
Writing 1 question (from a choice of 4)
Students have 1 page of A4 paper to answer a science-based essay prompt.
30 minutes

Quality score: 0 - 5 and score for Quality of written English: A - E
